Veterans are Euro Stars
Age proved no barrier for Wymondham Athletics Club members Anne Martin and Eva Osborne as they enjoyed medal success at the European Veterans’ Athletic Indoor championships in Belgium.
Well over 3000 athletes gathered in Ghent for the five-day championship. Anne and Eva were among the 300 plus competitors representing Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
To qualify for these games athletes have to be over 35 years old and competition is in five year age bands. Anne Martin (W75), barely recovered from having set a world record of 15-43:40 for 3000m at the British Championship only two weeks earlier; continued her outstanding success returning with four individual medals.

An anxious moment came on the first day when a German athlete attempted to beat her world record but missed by less than one second. Anne went on to win a gold medal in her long jump and triple jump setting a new British record in both.
The next day saw her tackling the hammer and weight. Although throwing exceptionally well, she was unable to get into the medals competing against former European and Commonwealth champions. However, she won a further individual medal in the 5k cross country race. Clubmate Eva (W70) competed in the cross country race and in the 4 x 200m relay, helping her team to a silver medal in both events. A solid run in the cross country event placed her first British runner home.
