Word from the Chair

Monday 29th March 2010

One month on from the AGM and time to launch into a new season and another word or two from the chair.

2010 looks like being a busy year with races and activities coming thick and fast, many of you have had a good winter with some great results in the various women’s and men’s cross country series that have taken place around the region from October to March, I have no doubt that the strength and stamina gained in these tough events will lead on to some great performances on the roads over the coming months, well done to all who took part.

Our own Wymondham 20  has been and gone and my thanks to all who helped out, many doubling up on tasks, rushing around making sure you were at the right point at the right time to ensure the race went smoothly and was enjoyable for all. The feedback we have received tends to suggest all went well although I think there were a few complaints about the hats. To those people let me just say that if I had my way there would be no hats no medals no nothing except the pleasure of running and seeing your name at the top of the order of finishers, but then I am just miserable so ignore me on this one. Seriously though think how much waste is created by medals, trophies etc!

Time to move forward and look at what’s coming up: Trowse 10k is just around the corner, 9.30 am on Easter Sunday, race centre at Norfolk Ski club. I have no doubt that as in previous years we will be well represented, good luck to all taking part. Over the weekend  23rd - 25th April a group from the club are travelling up to the Lake District to take part in the 15k Hawkshead Challenge trail race. This should be a good test of early season fitness, wish I had run a few cross country races now! This will hopefullybe a fun weekend, I understand that if the weather is good Gerry Watson may take us on a guided fell walk on the Sunday, let’s hope for some sun.

Last Monday evening we celebrated a special occasion for one of our members: Eva  Osborne reached the age of 70 on the 19th March, many congratulations from us all Eva you are an inspiration. Eva is the last current club member who formed the original Wymondham Joggers back in 1978, 32 years ago. A Former Chair of the club Eva has achieved great success with her running something she continues to do now across many disciplines. This year  in the taxing cross country series she has again achieved recognition, finishing third lady in the W55 category, a great effort. The evening was marked with the modelling of Club strips through the ages, thanks to all who found up the vests from yesteryear and to those who even managed to find the  ultra slick burgundy shorts. Thanks to Robert Scarfe who captured the evening on camera.

Finally, congratulations to all who have trained hard through a long winter, it will have been worth it. For those few training for the London marathon well done and keep it up. Thanks especially to the Coaches who have put on some great training sessions, committing much time to planning and delivery.

Enjoy running

Ian
