Word from the Chair

An article by the new Chairman. Ian Sturgess

Monday 6th July 2009.

Doesn’t  time fly when you are having fun, so fast in fact that you don’t realise that it’s more than two months since you sat down to write the last spell binding edition of ‘word from the chair’, it’s good sometimes to have someone on hand to give you a gentle reminder!

There has been lots going on over the past couple of months and I have continued to take great pleasure in reading out such great performances by our members.  Such has been the numbers of you taking part in local and not so local races that it has been difficult to give the recognition deserved to all and still get you all out running before 7pm, keep it up it’s what we are all about. I know that some of you have been a little surprised by one or two slightly slower 5 and 10k races over recent weeks, don’t be too hard on yourselves it has been just a touch warmer than we had been used to. On a serious note whether you are racing or out for a training run do please take account of the weather and particularly the temperature, drink plenty and stay hydrated or you can very quickly feel pretty bad.

We are now mid way through the Wroxham 5k series, the Broome 10k series and about to go with the second of our own club 5 mile races on a Monday night, next race Monday 13th July from the war memorial. Well done to all who have already taken part and good luck with the remaining races. Particular mention here to Jack Gillick who in his first season with us has already turned in some excellent performances being first Wymondham runner home on a number of occasions. I know racing is not for everyone but sometimes it is nice to just see how you are doing against the rest, there are some good events coming up in July not least the Worstead Festival 5 miler. This is always a good event and over recent years the race limit has been reached before the day so you will need to enter early to secure your place, go on give it a go!

One of the things that concerns me the most is that as club we offer something for everyone especially on Monday evenings, I know our coaching team share that concern and have been trying to ensure this is being achieved. Monday night is a time when you can make use of the structured coaching session rather than just go and have a trundle round although I would be the first to admit that sometimes a trundle round is exactly what you need.

However, I am a firm believer that at times it is good to try new stuff and work outside the comfort zone, normally much easier to do when you are in the company of other s who are equally unsure of whether going for a session with Andy at Kett’s Park was really a good idea, the last time I went I made the excuse sneaking off early to prepare tea and biscuits!  Please don’t  be pressured into thinking you can’t just enjoy a Monday run, you can and should if that’s your choice all I am suggesting as that it is good to mix it up along the way. If you have any comments about Monday nights please let me have your thoughts, we need to know.

 That’s it, keep running.
